Negotiating in the Arab World


Riad al Khouri trains, advises, lectures, and researches on Socio-economic Development, Geostrategy, Negotiation, Globalization, and Dispute Settlement, inter alia. After graduating from l’Ecole Internationale de Genève, he obtained a BA majoring in Economics from the American University of Beirut, and MLitt in the same subject from the University of Oxford. Among several other present positions, Riad is Director, Middle East, of GeoEconomica GmbH, Amman & Geneva. He is fluent in Arabic and English, with a strong working knowledge of French.


Negotiating in the Arab World

Despite chronic or more recent concerns, Arab countries offer major opportunities for Western firms (especially in - but not limited to – high tech). However, negotiating new deals with regional counterparts usually differs from those involving Europeans or others in the West.  Moreover, Arab players themselves take a different approach to negotiation when dealing with entities from such places as Germany; and despite superficial convergence due to globalization, Westerners eyeing business with Arabs must be wary of employing traditional negotiation tactics within a normal strategy, since success with the latter in the West can be quite misleading in an Arab context.
